About the Kurdish Chemical Weapons Attacks
In March 1988, the Ba’athist regime of Saddam Hussein perpetrated one of the most horrific atrocities of the 20th century: the massive Halabja chemical attack, also known as the Halabja massacre.
In a calculated act of genocide, the Iraqi military dropped a cocktail of mustard gas, sarin, tabun, and other nerve agents on the civilian population, killing an estimated 5,000 people and injuring over 10,000 more.
This was not an isolated chemical attack but the brutal climax of the “Anfal” campaign, a series of systematic genocidal war crimes against the Kurds. More than three decades later, the death toll continues to rise. Halabja victims and their children suffer from catastrophic long-term health effects, including severe respiratory illnesses, persistent cancers, and devastating birth defects.
Who Is Responsible for the Kurdish Chemical Weapons Attacks?
While the attack was ordered by Saddam Hussein, his Iraqi regime did not act alone. The technological and chemical foundation for this genocide was allegedly knowingly provided by a network of hundreds of European corporations.
These companies, in pursuit of profit, are accused of consenting to and assisting in the creation of Iraq’s chemical weapons program, making money from the very tools of genocide.
These legal actions aim to prove in a court of law that corporations that profit from human rights atrocities can be held accountable, no matter where they are based or how many decades have passed.
Allegations Against the Corporations
The core allegation is that these companies knew, or should have known, that the chemical precursors, technology, and infrastructure they were selling to Saddam Hussein and Iraqi officials were intended for use in chemical weapons.
These corporations allegedly:
- Supplied Chemical Precursors: Knowingly provided the raw chemical ingredients necessary to manufacture poison gasses, sarin, and other nerve agents.
- Provided Technology & Equipment: Sold Iraq the reactors, production plants, and delivery system technology required to build a sophisticated chemical weapons program.
- Circumvented Export Controls: Used front companies and deceptive practices to bypass international arms embargoes and export controls designed to prevent the proliferation of such weapons.
