If you are coping with the consequences of a serious or fatal oil rig explosion or another serious offshore accident, our maritime lawyers are prepared to fight for the compensation you and your family deserve. We handle cases against oil and gas companies and other entities in the oil and gas industry, and we are committed to seeking just compensation for our clients’ losses.

Our oil rig explosion lawyers represent workers and their families in cases involving offshore accidents in the Gulf of Mexico and other waters. When explosions happen, we work quickly to gather the evidence we need to hold the negligent parties accountable. Oil rig explosion injuries and injuries from other major offshore accidents can leave victims and their families facing substantial losses, so it is critical that you promptly hire an experienced lawyer who can help you fight for just compensation.

Update for December 12, 2025: Oil Rig Explosions

According to reports, various companies have offered a total of $279 million for drilling rights in the Gulf of Mexico in the first of 30 planned sales by the federal government. As a result, we could see a substantial increase in offshore drilling-related activity in the Gulf relatively soon.

For oil company employees working in the Gulf, on-the-job injuries are a very real concern. This includes injuries from explosions and other major catastrophes. Our attorneys provide experienced legal representation for oil workers and their families, and we are prepared to help anyone who needs to assert their legal rights.

Previous Oil Rig Explosion Lawsuit Updates

November 28, 2025 – Safety on offshore oil rigs is a major concern. While this is especially true during hurricane season in the Gulf of Mexico, the unfortunate reality is that it remains true in all waters year-round.

Despite federal offshore drilling regulations and laws like the Jones Act that protect offshore workers, accidents on offshore oil rigs remain far too common. If you are facing the consequences of an offshore drilling accident, our lawyers may be able to help you recover just compensation, and we invite you to contact us for a free and confidential consultation.

November 14, 2025 – There are two months left in the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season. For oil rig workers in the Gulf of Mexico, hurricanes can present serious (and, in some cases, life-threatening) risks. Fortunately, we haven’t had any major hurricanes in the Gulf this season, and it looks like this might end up being a relatively benign hurricane season for the United States.

Of course, while hurricanes can present risks for offshore oil rig workers, these workers face a variety of other risks on a daily basis. If you or someone you love has been harmed working offshore, you may be entitled to financial compensation, and we encourage you to contact us for more information.

October 31, 2025 – The Guardian published an article this week recounting one oil rig worker’s traumatic experience when the Piper Alpha oil platform ignited in 1988. It is a fascinating, and harrowing, story that is well worth reading.

October 24, 2025 – Oil rig explosions can leave workers and their families facing devastating losses. This makes it critical for those who are suffering to assert their legal rights. Unlike typical on-the-job accident cases, oil rig explosion cases are not governed by state workers’ compensation laws. Instead, they are governed by federal laws including the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act (OCSLA) and the Death on the High Seas Act (DOHA).

As a result, if you need to file a claim, it is important to have experienced legal representation. At Oberheiden Law Group, we are committed to fighting for oil rig workers and their families. If you have questions about your rights under federal law, contact us for a free, no-obligation consultation today.

October 17, 2025 – Here is another article discussing the explosion at the Chevron oil refinery in El Segundo that we discussed in last week’s update. According to the article, investigations are underway, and Chevron “has remained tight-lipped about the root cause” of the explosion.

The article also reports that industry experts have suggested that, “equipment failure is a likely culprit.” At this point, though, it is too early to make any assumptions.

October 10, 2025 – There was an explosion at a Chevron oil refinery in El Segundo, California last week. According to the Los Angeles Times, “[a]lthough refinery fires are not unheard of . . . industry experts say the sheer scale of the El Segundo fire last week raises concerns about what went wrong and requires a thorough investigation.”

Fortunately, the Los Angeles Times reports that no one was killed in the blast, and only a small number of workers reported minor injuries. The publication quotes an expert as saying that Chevron was “extremely, extremely lucky.”

October 3, 2025 – This week, Britannica released updated versions of its articles on the Piper Alpha and Deepwater Horizon offshore oil rig disasters. These are sobering reads that provide a stark reminder of the devastation that offshore oil rig explosions can cause.

Are you living with the consequences of an offshore oil rig explosion? If so, our lawyers may be able to help you. For a free, no-obligation consultation, contact us today.

September 26, 2025 – Offshore magazine recently published an article discussing ways that companies can mitigate the risk of offshore oil rig fires and explosions. In particular, the article, titled A Risk-Based Approach to Safety Mitigates Offshore Fire Hazards, notes that, “[e]ffective corrosion management of offshore steel infrastructures results in a reduction of fire hazards and extends an asset’s lifespan.”

Despite the clear benefits of corrosion management, it is clear that far too many offshore drilling companies neglect this key maintenance activity—corrosion has been identified as a factor in several offshore catastrophes. If you believe that inadequate corrosion management is to blame for your injuries or a loved one’s death offshore, we strongly encourage you to contact us for more information.

September 19, 2025 – This is the first of what we anticipate will be numerous weekly updates to this page. Unfortunately, oil rig explosions and other serious accidents involving both onshore and offshore oil rigs are far more common than they should be. For example, the federal Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) reports that there were more than 200 injuries on offshore oil rigs in 2023 alone (this is the most recent year for which data are available).

If you have been seriously injured or a loved one has been seriously injured or killed in an onshore or offshore oil rig accident, you may be entitled to significant financial compensation. Our lawyers can explain everything you need to know; and, if you have a claim, we can take legal action at no out-of-pocket cost to you.

Whether you were injured when your rig exploded or you have tragically lost a loved one in an oil rig explosion or another offshore accident, our oil rig explosion attorneys are prepared to fight for just compensation on your behalf. Keep reading to learn more about the types of cases we handle, then contact us for a free consultation about your legal rights:

Offshore Oil Rig Explosions

When properly managed and properly maintained, oil rigs should be safe places to work. Gas and oil companies are required to follow numerous safety standards, and these standards are designed specifically to protect workers from severe injuries—or worse.

Unfortunately, far too often, gas and oil companies prioritize their profits over their workers’ safety. As a result, far too often, we see oil rig explosions caused by issues that could—and should—have been prevented. This includes common causes of oil rig explosions such as:

  • Oil spills due to failure to contain pressurized oil
  • Leaking gas (including natural gas)
  • Failure to implement safety precautions or follow safety standards
  • Inadequate maintenance of oil rigs, equipment, or heavy machinery
  • Negligence caused by inadequate training

When you hire an oil rig explosion attorney at Oberheiden Law Group to represent you, your attorney will work to gather the documentation and other evidence needed to prove why the explosion happened. Once we know why the oil rig exploded, then we can shift our focus to fighting for just compensation. As discussed below, in a typical case, we will be able to seek to recover compensation for our client’s medical bills, lost wages, emotional distress, and other financial and non-financial losses.

Other Oil Rig Accidents that Leave Workers Severely Injured or Result in Wrongful Death

Along with oil rig explosion cases, we handle cases involving other offshore oil rig accidents as well. This includes (but is by no means limited to) accidents that result in:

  • Severe burns and other burn injuries
  • Crush injuries
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Other serious injuries with life-altering or fatal consequences

Regardless of the injuries you or your loved one suffered, the first step toward seeking the compensation you deserve is to speak with an experienced oil rig explosion lawyer about your legal rights. At Oberheiden Law Group, we provide free consultations for workers and family members, and we do not charge any fees or costs unless we help our clients recover just compensation.

Damages Available to Offshore Oil Rig Workers and Their Families in Cases Involving Oil Rig Explosions and Other Major Offshore Accidents

When we represent workers and family members in offshore oil rig cases, we fight to recover just compensation for all of our clients’ financial and non-financial losses. This includes common losses such as:

Medical Bills and Other Costs of Medical Care

Oil rig explosion injuries and other serious injuries can leave injured workers facing medical bills that far exceed what they can afford to pay. Serious and fatal injuries can leave workers and their families facing other care-related costs as well.

Lost Wages

Injured workers and their families can seek just compensation for their lost wages resulting from oil rig explosions and other offshore accidents. This includes financial losses they have already incurred and financial losses they will incur in the future.

Emotional Distress

Oil rig explosions and other accidents can leave injured workers facing serious emotional distress. Calculating these and other non-financial losses presents unique challenges, so it is important to choose an experienced oil rig explosion lawyer who can help ensure you are seeking the full compensation you deserve.

Loss of Consortium

Loss of consortium refers to the inability to spend meaningful time and enjoy sexual relations with one’s spouse. Loss of consortium damages are available in oil rig explosion cases involving life-altering injuries and wrongful death.

Other Life-Changing Consequences

Injured workers and grieving family members can—and should—seek compensation for the other life-changing consequences of serious and fatal oil rig explosions as well. This includes, but is not limited to, consequences such as:

  • Funeral, burial, and cremation expenses
  • Loss of companionship and society
  • Loss of enjoyment of life
  • Loss of services and support
  • Pain and suffering

Again, our oil rig explosion lawyers will fight to recover the full compensation you and your family deserve. While many successful oil rig explosion cases settle, we are prepared to fight for our clients’ rights in federal court when necessary. Our lawyers have handled numerous cases involving different types of claims in courts across the country.

How Our Maritime Lawyers Fight to Help Oil Rig Workers and Family Members Recover Compensation for Serious and Fatal Injuries

If your rig exploded, you were injured in another offshore accident, or you are struggling to cope with the unexpected loss of a loved one who worked offshore, our attorneys have the experience needed to hold the negligent parties accountable. When you choose Oberheiden Law Group to represent you, our oil rig explosion attorneys will:

  • Conduct a comprehensive investigation to determine which companies in oil and gas industry deserve to be held accountable;
  • Work with the U.S. Coast Guard and other authorities on your behalf as necessary during the investigative process;
  • Carefully calculate the financial and non-financial losses you are entitled to recover;
  • File your (or your family’s) lawsuit under the Jones Act or under other applicable federal law; and,
  • Work to negotiate a favorable settlement if possible while showing that we are fully prepared to fight for your (or your family’s legal rights at trial).

FAQs: Hiring an Oil Rig Explosion Attorney to Fight for Just Compensation

Does the Jones Act Apply When an Oil Rig Explosion Occurred Offshore?

Yes, the Jones Act typically applies when an oil rig explosion occurs offshore. However, the Death on the High Seas Act (DOHSA) applies in some cases as well. Our oil rig explosion attorneys can determine which law protects you and your family.

Can Companies in the Oil and Gas Industry Be Held Responsible for Offshore Explosions?

Yes, companies in the oil and gas industry can—and should—be held fully responsible for offshore explosions. When an oil spill, leaking gas, equipment failure, or any other failure leads to an explosion that could—and should—have been prevented, workers and their families have clear legal rights.

Can I File a Lawsuit for an Offshore Accident Involving an Equipment Failure?

Yes, equipment failures are among the leading causes of offshore accidents resulting in serious injuries, and even death. Whether you are dealing with burn injuries, crush injuries, a traumatic brain injury, or the loss of a loved one, we can help you seek just compensation for the costs of your (or your loved one’s) medical care as well as your other financial and non-financial losses.

Was There a Lawsuit Related to the Deepwater Horizon Explosion?

There were multiple lawsuits related to the Deepwater Horizon explosion in 2010. This includes wrongful death lawsuits filed by the families of some of the workers who were tragically killed in the accident. The Deepwater Horizon rig was operated by British Petroleum (commonly referred to as BP), and BP ended up paying tens of billions of dollars in financial compensation to families and the government.

It costs nothing out-of-pocket to hire a lawyer for an oil rig explosion case. At Oberheiden Law Group, we (like most other law firms) handle these cases on a contingency-fee basis. This means that you will not have to pay a retainer fee or monthly legal bills for our oil rig explosion attorneys’ services, and you will not have to pay anything at all unless we help you recover financial compensation.
