Dr. Nick Oberheiden: Tax Attorney

Dr. Nick Oberheiden is the founding partner of the national law firm Oberheiden P.C. and a leading tax attorney at the firm. With his experienced legal advice and guidance, numerous corporations and individuals have insulated themselves from some severe legal threats and beaten back serious allegations of tax-related misconduct. Regardless of what juncture your case is in – from needing legal input on tax compliance to preparing for an audit or investigation to defending against a civil lawsuit or criminal charge to appealing the outcome of one – Dr. Nick Oberheiden can provide the legal services that you need.
Practice Areas in Tax Law
Tax law is a surprisingly wide practice area, with numerous sub-fields and niches. Just a few of the areas and types of cases that Nick has personally handled in the past for individual and corporate clients have been:
- Corporate tax issues
- Maximizing deductions, exclusions, and credits
- International tax issues
- Tax shelters
- Real estate tax issues
- Issues related to allegations of tax evasion, including:
- IRS investigations and requests for further information
- Inaccurate deductions
- Omitted income
- Investigations of tax preparers and certified public accountants (CPAs)
- Payroll tax fraud
- Appealing tax cases
- Tax debt
- Back tax relief
- Tax liens and penalty abatements
- Tax debt forgiveness
- Installment agreements
- Offers in compromise
- Obtaining a “currently not collectible” status
Getting effective legal guidance in these and other important areas of tax law is essential, as the penalties of noncompliance are severe. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) does not play around when it comes to collecting the taxes that it says you owe, and often resorts to civil litigation or even criminal charges to get them and to make an example of you. The good news is that Dr. Nick Oberheiden and the other federal criminal defense lawyers at Oberheiden P.C. have extensive experience handling criminal allegations of tax evasion and fraud, including on appeal. With Nick’s help, numerous former clients have been able to avoid or at least mitigate the penalties that come from tax issues, like:
- Prison time
- Probation
- Massive civil or criminal fines
- Restitution
- Paying back taxes
- Bankruptcy
- Heavy tax liens
- The collateral consequences of having a criminal conviction for tax fraud on your record
In many cases, Dr. Nick Oberheiden and his team of tax defense lawyers at Oberheiden P.C. have been able to intervene in the IRS audit or investigation and present carefully chosen exculpatory evidence that effectively undermines the agents’ cause for concern. If done properly, this can end the investigation almost before it begins, slashing your legal defense bills and avoiding an intensively stressful process. Even if this is not possible, by invoking your rights and keeping the investigation from expanding outside of its permissible scope, Nick can severely weaken the case that the IRS can develop against you.
Representative Clients
Nearly everyone in the United States has tax issues, and Dr. Nick Oberheiden strives to legally represent every sort of person or corporation that has them. The breadth of Nick’s clientele has given him unparalleled insight into the nuances that come with the field, allowing him to provide even better representation to each successive tax client.
Just a few of the sorts of individual clients that Nick has represented in the past have been:

- Freelance earners or contractors with 1099s
- High income earners with vastly more complicated filings
- People whose income is in the form of financial assets and other forms of ownership, rather than wages
- Immigrants with both U.S. and foreign tax concerns
- Small business owners

These are just individual clients. Dr. Nick Oberheiden has also guided numerous corporate clients through what is often a far more complex taxation process. Just a few of these have been:

- B-corporations
- Non-profit corporations, including 501(c)(3)s
- Publicly traded companies
- Closed corporations
- Multinational corporations
Depending on the field or industry that these companies operate in, the tax compliance needs can be substantial. Making a mistake, even an honest one, can lead to hefty tax liabilities and a public relations nightmare that can tarnish the company’s brand for years to come.

Media Appearances
In addition to having an accomplished educational background, Dr. Nick Oberheiden also has a long list of media appearances in a variety of media and on numerous major outlets. The media that Nick has experience handling include:
- Television
- Radio
- Newspapers
- Podcasts
- Video
- Social media
Just a few of the more prominent outlets that Nick has been on have included:
- NBC
- CNBC
- Forbes Magazine
- The Wall Street Journal
- Fox News
- The Los Angeles Times
In all, Nick has been interviewed over 1,500 times for his legal opinion both in cases in which he was representing a client and those in which he was not.
This experience matters, especially for corporate clients that are worried about their tax issues harming their business brand. Nick understands full well that tax cases are not just played out in the courtroom – they are also fought in the court of public opinion. This means getting ahead of the narrative and managing it effectively are both crucial for your long-term success. Winning against the IRS and avoiding a massive payment of back taxes and other financial liabilities is great, but if the public is convinced from the proceedings that you and your company are shirking its tax obligations then the financial losses from the downturn in business that you suffer may outweigh the tax savings that you won with an effective legal defense.
