Update for December 12, 2025: Uber Sexual Assault Claims
Nearly 200 plaintiffs joined the Uber sexual assault multidistrict litigation in November, bringing the total number of pending cases to 2,949 as of December 2, 2025. This is out of a total of 3,022 lawsuits filed to date. The Uber sexual assault MDL has been growing rapidly in recent months, and we expect this rapid growth to continue into 2026.
Our attorneys are continuing to schedule free consultations during the holiday season, and we strongly encourage you to contact us if you have questions about holding Uber accountable. We are more than happy to schedule a confidential call at a time that is convenient for you.
Previous Uber Sexual Assault Lawsuit Updates
November 28, 2025 – The first jury trial in the Uber sexual assault litigation has been scheduled for January 13, 2026. This is what is known as a “bellwether” trial. Bellwether trials are used to assess how juries are likely to respond to plaintiffs’ allegations on a broader scale; and, when bellwether juries find in favor of plaintiffs, these findings often (though not always) lead to settlement negotiations.
As a result, the January bellwether trial will be closely watched. In the meantime, we are continuing to accept new cases. If you have questions about filing a sex abuse lawsuit against Uber, we strongly encourage you to contact us for a free and confidential consultation today.
November 14, 2025 – More than 500 new plaintiffs joined the Uber sexual abuse multidistrict litigation (MDL) in October. While there were 2,271 lawsuits pending as of October 1, the latest status report from the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) indicates that there were 2,783 lawsuits pending as of November 3, 2025. This is out of a total of 2,847 lawsuits filed.
This is an enormous increase, and it highlights the potential scope of the Uber sexual abuse MDL. The MDL is just getting started, and it is already among the largest pending proceedings in the country. If you have questions about suing Uber for sexual abuse you experienced at the hands of one of the company’s rideshare drivers, we strongly encourage you to contact us for a free consultation.
October 31, 2025 – Along with lawsuits against Uber, we are also handling sexual assault lawsuits against Lyft. Recently, founding attorney Nick Oberheiden, PhD wrote an article discussing the Lyft sexual assault litigation that was published by the National Law Review. It provides an overview of the allegations against Lyft and provides other important information for victims—and we encourage you to read it if you have questions about your legal rights.
October 24, 2025 – New Jersey’s Attorney General has reportedly launched an investigation into Uber’s handling of passengers’ sexual assault claims. This adds to the scrutiny that Uber is facing as the result of sexual assault lawsuits filed by passengers across the country.
In these lawsuits, plaintiffs are also seeking to uncover information about Uber’s handling of sexual assault allegations—as well as information about the company’s efforts to protect passengers from predatory drivers. We are currently accepting claims against Uber; and, if you have questions about filing a sexual assault lawsuit, we invite you to contact us for a free and confidential consultation.
October 17, 2025 – According to reports, an Uber driver in Tennessee has sued the rideshare company after allegedly being sexually assaulted by a passenger. Reports indicate that the driver is alleging the company’s safety protocols were inadequate and that it failed to respond when she activated her emergency button.
While the majority of the sexual assault lawsuits against Uber have been filed by passengers, drivers who have been victimized may have grounds to sue the rideshare company as well. If you have questions about your legal rights, we strongly encourage you to contact us for more information.
October 10, 2025 – The first trial in the United States involving sexual assault allegations against Uber has resulted in a jury verdict in favor of the rideshare company. While the jury found that Uber had been negligent in failing to implement adequate safety measures, it also found that the company’s negligence was not a “substantial factor” in the plaintiff’s sexual assault.
While this is an unfortunate verdict for this plaintiff, it is important to emphasize that this is just the first case of many that will go to trial. For other plaintiffs, the verdict serves as a roadmap for what they will need to prove in order to seek justice for their victimization.
October 3, 2025 – Approximately 150 plaintiffs joined the national sexual assault multidistrict litigation (MDL) against Uber in September, bringing the total number of lawsuits pending in the MDL to 2,271 as of October 1, 2025. Lawsuits are pending outside of the MDL as well. If you have questions about suing Uber for sexual assault, our lawyers can explain everything you need to know, and we strongly encourage you to contact us for a free and confidential consultation.
September 26, 2025 – Yesterday, the New York Times reported that, “[a] House oversight subcommittee on Wednesday opened an inquiry into how Uber handles incidents of sexual assault and sexual misconduct on its ride-sharing platform.” As the newspaper also reports, “[t]he inquiry comes weeks after a New York Times investigation found that such incidents occur, on average, tens of thousands of times a year, an amount far more pervasive than what the company has previously disclosed.”
If you have been victimized by an Uber driver you are not alone—and you, like other victims, deserve justice. To speak with a lawyer at Oberheiden Law Group about your legal rights in confidence, contact us for a free consultation today.
Call 866-781-9539 or email us now for your free consultation.
September 19, 2025 – The judge presiding over the Uber sexual abuse multidistrict litigation (MDL) has prohibited the rideshare company’s lawyers from questioning plaintiffs about their prior sexual activity unless their lawyers “open the door.” You might wonder why this was necessary. Unfortunately, blaming victims is a common defense strategy in these types of cases; although, to be fair, it’s not entirely clear whether this was Uber’s plan in this particular case. At Oberheiden Law Group, we are committed to protecting our clients’ privacy, and we are passionate about fighting for the justice that sexual abuse victims deserve.
September 12, 2025 – The first bellwether trial in the Uber sexual assault litigation is underway. As reported by Bloomberg Law, the trial is expected to last “all month.” We will provide updates as we have them; and, as we have discussed in previous updates, we are still strongly encouraging victims to come forward.
September 5, 2025 – Uber was facing 2,583 lawsuits in the national rideshare sexual abuse litigation as of September 2, 2025. This means that 70 new plaintiffs joined the litigation in August. We expect the litigation to continue growing rapidly; and, as more plaintiffs come forward, Uber will face enhanced financial pressure to settle.
August 29, 2025 – More Uber sexual abuse lawsuits are continuing to get filed; and, with awareness of these lawsuits growing, it will be interesting to see how much the litigation has grown in August. We should find out next week when the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) issues its monthly status report, which we expect to see on September 1.
In the meantime, if you have questions about filing an Uber sexual assault lawsuit, we strongly encourage you to get in touch. Your initial consultation is 100% confidential, and you are under no obligation to move forward with asserting your legal rights. If you decide that you want to assert your legal rights, our lawyers can handle your case at no out-of-pocket cost to you.
August 22, 2025 – The first two bellwether trials in the national Uber sexual assault multidistrict litigation (MDL) will involve lawsuits filed by plaintiffs in Arizona and North Carolina. However, lawsuits have been filed by plaintiffs across the country, and anyone who has been victimized by their Uber driver is potentially eligible to join the MDL. If you have questions about filing a sexual assault lawsuit against Uber, our lawyers can explain everything you need to know in a free, no-obligation consultation. Contact us today.
August 15, 2025 – We recently published a series of pages that provide additional information for victims who need to pursue sexual assault claims against Uber. These pages are linked in the “Further Information” section below.
In other news, late last week The New York Times published an in-depth article discussing what the publication calls, “Uber’s Festering Sexual Assault Problem.” It is a highly informative piece that is well worth reading.
August 8, 2025 – Uber was facing 2,513 lawsuits in the national multidistrict litigation (MDL) against the company involving sexual assault allegations as of August 1, 2025. This puts the Uber sexual assault MDL among the largest pending MDL cases in the country.
If you have questions about filing a sexual assault lawsuit against Uber, we want to hear from you. To find out if you are eligible to join the national MDL and fight to hold Uber accountable, contact us for a free consultation today.
August 1, 2025 – Judge Charles Breyer, the judge presiding over the Uber rideshare sexual assault multidistrict litigation (MDL) in federal court, held a case management conference this week, and another case management conference is on the docket for August 12, 2025. He is seeking to nail down the cases that will be scheduled for the first bellwether trials.
As discussed in last week’s update, bellwether trials play an important role in MDL proceedings in federal courts.
Call 866-781-9539 or email us now for your free consultation.
The litigation against Uber in California state court is moving forward as well. While Uber has filed motions for summary judgement (which, if successful, would result in plaintiffs’ lawsuits being dismissed without a trial) in the consolidated California state court proceeding, there is reason to believe that its efforts will be unsuccessful. Ultimately, we believe there is a good chance that both the MDL proceeding in federal court and the California state court proceedings involving rideshare sexual assault lawsuits against Uber will end with sizable settlements (though, of course, there are no guarantees).
July 25, 2025 – A key step in any multidistrict litigation (MDL) proceeding in federal court is the first bellwether trial. Based on the schedule set by Judge Charles Breyer, the first of the bellwether trials in the Uber sexual assault MDL is currently expected to take place later this year. In all, 20 cases have been selected for bellwether trials, although the court ruled that one of these cases should be dismissed earlier this month.
In that case, Uber argued that its “Don’t Drink and Drive” and “Stay Safe Tonight” marketing campaigns did not support the plaintiffs’ fraud allegations. However several additional allegations against the rideshare company remain pending.
We are expecting some major developments in the Uber sexual assault MDL over the next 12 months—and, for victims who have not yet filed a sexual assault lawsuit, now is a good time to talk to a lawyer about taking legal action.
July 18, 2025 – The Uber sexual assault multidistrict litigation (MDL) is pending in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. That court describes the MDL as follows:
“This is a Multi District Litigation (MDL) case involving whether Uber Technologies, Inc. and related entities (collectively, “Uber”) failed to implement appropriate safety precautions to protect passengers. Plaintiffs are former Uber passengers who were sexually assaulted or harassed by their Uber drivers. . . .”
Does this describe you? If so, we want to help you fight to hold Uber accountable. To discuss joining the Uber sexual assault MDL with an experienced attorney at Oberheiden Law Group for free, give us a call or contact us online today.

If you have questions about filing an Uber sexual assault lawsuit, you are not alone, and you should talk to a lawyer promptly.
Uber Sexual Assault Cases Involve Allegations of Negligence Against Uber Technologies
Uber sexual assault cases involve allegations of negligence against Uber Technologies. Uber assault lawsuits allege that the company is responsible for each sexual assault committed by an Uber driver because the company failed to effectively use the Uber platform to screen drivers and implement other enhanced safety measures as necessary.
The Uber Multidistrict Litigation is Not an Uber Class Action Lawsuit
The Uber multidistrict litigation (MDL) involves individual sexual assault claims against the company involving reported sexual assaults committed by Uber drivers. The MDL is not a class action lawsuit.
MDL proceedings and class action proceedings differ in important ways–with one of the most important differences being that Uber passengers who experienced sexual assault can seek full compensation for their losses in an MDL.

Filing an Uber sexual assault lawsuit is important for those who have been sexually assaulted by an Uber driver. Filing a lawsuit is one of the most effective ways to hold companies like Uber Technologies accountable. The Disturbing Reality of Uber’s Sexual Assault Problem
Uber, like other rideshare companies, presents itself as a safe and reliable mode of transport. However, their own safety reports tell a different story. In their latest U.S. Safety Report, covering 2021-2022, Uber documented 2,717 reports of sexual assault during trips.
These are not just abstract numbers; they represent real sexual assault victims who have faced horrific violations ranging from non-consensual touching and kissing to attempted sexual penetration and rape.
While Uber often highlights that these incidents represent a tiny fraction of its rides, the sheer volume of reported assaults suggests a systemic problem. The problem isn’t new. Earlier reports revealed similar patterns in cases involving reported victims of sexual assault who had hailed a ride using the Uber app:
- 2019-2020: 2,847 reports of sexual violence.
- 2017-2018: 5,981 sexual violence or assault allegations, with 3,045 in 2018 alone.
These statistics, while concerning, are likely an underestimation of the true scope of the issue. Many sexual abuse incidents go unreported due to fear, shame, self-blame, or a belief that nothing can be done. Uber prioritized rapid growth and failed to implement essential safety measures.
The power dynamic inherent in a rideshare scenario, where a passenger is in an enclosed space with an Uber driver who controls their movement, creates a unique vulnerability that predators can exploit. This is particularly true for individuals who may be intoxicated or traveling alone.
Uber’s Responsibility and Allegations of Negligence Leading to Sexual Assaults
At its core, the Uber platform connects passengers with drivers. While Uber classifies drivers as independent contractors, plaintiffs have argued in Uber sexual assault lawsuits that Uber maintains a significant degree of control over its drivers and, therefore, has a legal and moral duty to ensure passenger safety. Uber sexual assault lawsuits often allege systemic negligence.
Inadequate Driver Screening
Despite claims of rigorous background checks, allegations frequently arise that Uber’s screening processes are insufficient in preventing sexual assault incidents. Uber has historically resisted implementing more robust measures like fingerprint-based background checks, which could provide a more comprehensive criminal history review.
Failure to Act on Warnings
Lawsuits contend that Uber has been aware for years of a pattern of driver assaults but the company failed to implement adequate safety measures or promptly remove drivers with a history of misconduct. In some cases, plaintiffs argue that Uber has failed or refused to acknowledge that their sexual assault occurred.
Insufficient Safety Features
While Uber has introduced some safety features like RideCheck and emergency buttons, critics argue these are often reactive rather than proactive in preventing sexual misconduct by Uber drivers. There’s a clear demand for more preventive measures, such as in-car cameras or stricter identity verification.
Prioritizing Profit Over Safety
In many Uber sexual assault lawsuits, plaintiffs argue that Uber has prioritized its rapid expansion and profitability over the safety of its passengers, cutting corners on security protocols to maximize growth.
Lack of Transparency and Support
Survivors often face an uphill battle in reporting incidents and receiving adequate support from Uber. The process can be cumbersome, and there are concerns about the company’s willingness to cooperate with law enforcement in all cases fully.

Uber Sexual Assault FAQs
What Is an Uber Sexual Assault?
An Uber sexual assault refers to any non-consensual sexual act or behavior that occurs during an Uber ride, involving either a driver or a passenger. These incidents can range from unwanted touching and inappropriate comments to attempted sexual penetration and rape.
Such acts constitute a severe violation of trust and personal safety, often leaving survivors with profound and lasting trauma. Attorneys help define the legal parameters of the assault, ensuring the survivor’s experience is accurately represented in court.
What Are My Rights if an Uber Driver Sexually Assaulted Me?
If you were sexually assaulted by a driver after hailing a ride with the Uber app, you have the right to seek to hold Uber fully accountable. Uber is currently facing thousands of sexual assault cases brought by riders who allege that they were sexually assaulted by their drivers (as of August 1, 2025).
If your lawyer can prove that an Uber driver sexually assaulted you and that the company is responsible, you are entitled to seek just compensation for all of the financial and non-financial harm you have suffered (and will suffer) as a result of your sexual assault.
Can I Sue Uber If I Was Sexually Assaulted by an Uber Driver?
Those who have experienced sexual assaults perpetrated by Uber drivers may be able to pursue civil lawsuits against Uber. While Uber often classifies drivers as independent contractors, sexual assault lawsuits frequently argue that Uber has a duty to ensure passenger safety through adequate screening, safety measures, and response to complaints.
A skilled personal injury attorney focusing on rideshare litigation can help you seek to establish Uber’s alleged negligence, connecting the company’s actions or inactions to your sexual assault.
What Kind of Evidence is Used in an Uber Sexual Assault Case?
Important evidence includes ride records (driver details, route, time) from the Uber app, Uber drivers’ communication logs, sexual assault reports, medical records (including forensic exams), psychological evaluations, and any available surveillance footage. Personal testimonies from the survivor and witnesses are also vital.
What Can I Do to Help Prove Sexual Assault By My Uber Driver?
To help prove sexual assault by your Uber driver, you can preserve as much evidence as possible. This includes taking screenshots in the Uber app, keeping any photos or videos from the night the sexual assault occurred, and taking detailed notes.
While these are all good steps to take if possible, for sexual assault victims who have Uber claims, the most important step is to talk to a lawyer as soon as possible. At Oberheiden Law Group, we are handling claims involving sexual assaults committed by Uber drivers nationwide, and we are relentlessly committed to seeking justice for our clients.
Do Uber Lawsuits Involve Claims Against the Company or Against an Uber Driver?
Uber lawsuits generally involve claims against the company rather than the individual Uber driver who perpetrated the sexual assault (or other sexual misconduct). There are a couple of reasons why.
First, an Uber driver who commits a sexual assault can be held accountable in criminal court with the victim needing to file a lawsuit. Second, Uber has vastly more resources than any Uber driver. Uber lawsuits allege that the company failed to take the necessary steps to protect passengers–and this is enough to establish a claim for just compensation.
Is There an Uber Sexual Assault Settlement?
No, there is not an Uber sexual assault settlement–at least not yet. Uber Technologies is currently facing multidistrict litigation (MDL) involving more than 2,500 sexual assault claims (as of August 1, 2025) filed by ridershare passengers across the country. While this litigation might eventually result in an Uber sexual assault settlement, there are no guarantees.
What is the Uber Technologies Multidistrict Litigation (Uber MDL)?
The Uber Technologies multidistrict litigation (Uber MDL) is a nationwide legal proceeding in which rideshare passengers are seeking financial compensation for the consequences of their alleged sexual assaults (they are alleged because the litigation has not yet been resolved). Multidistrict litigation proceedings allow plaintiffs with similar claims to pursue their claims jointly rather than in separate legal proceedings across the country.
This streamlines the process and minimizes the costs involved for all plaintiffs.
If you have a sexual assault lawsuit against Uber, our lawyers can help you decide whether to join the MDL. There is also a parallel consolidated proceeding currently taking place in California state court, and sexual assault and sexual abuse victims can file stand-alone claims as well. If you experienced sexual assault or sexual abuse at the hands of an Uber driver, our lawyers can help you decide how to pursue legal action based on your specific circumstances.
What Types of Sexual Assault Incidents Qualify for the Uber Sexual Assault MDL?
All types of sexual assault incidents qualify for the Uber MDL. If you were sexually assaulted by an Uber driver, we strongly encourage you to speak with one of our lawyers about filing an Uber sexual assault lawsuit in the MDL.
